The Stadsmuseum Almelo is looked after and maintained by the non-profit organization Stichting Museum for the local history of Almelo and established on January 8th 1975.

Behind Closed Doors.. Up until the end of 1986, the museum was kept on the upper floor of the Waaggebouw on the Market Square. From March 1987 the collection was moved into the Rectors House which at that time was also home to the Latin School.
