City of water

Almelo originated at a crossroads of land and waterways. That is why the water still runs right through the city centre, which makes Almelo the only real water town in Twente. There are plenty of spots to relax on or along the water directly from the heart of the city.

Walk the water path

The Water Path Route is one of the most popular walking routes in Almelo. This route takes you along the most prominent waterways, both inside and outside of the city. Don't feel like walking? The majority of the route is also excellent for cycling.

Canoeing and kayaking

You can discover Almelo by canoe! In no time you can leave the busy streets of the city behind and enter the green estate of the Van Rechteren-Limpurg family. Various canoes and kayaks can be rented at Café België and De Waag.

Marina and terrace on the river Aa

Near the city centre, there is a well-equipped marina. On a warm summer day, you can sit by the water on the terrace of Café België.

New opportunities along the Water Boulevard

The Water Boulevard is the newest way to experience the water in Almelo. It follows the course of the old port that was discontinued in the 1960s. You can relax on the terrace of restaurant Kreta or on the terrace boat of Dock 19. Enjoy the impressive modern architecture of the City Hall and court house or one of the many sculptures along the docks.
